Bekal And Nileshwaram- Beach Towns Of Kerala

Kasaragod district in Kerala’s far north is home to the gorgeous beach towns of Bekal and Nileshwaram, located 25 km away from each other on the Malabar coast. Nileshwaram (a.k.a. Nileshwar) is also known as the cultural capital of North Malabar.

Nileshwaram lies 90 km to the south of Mangalore on the Northern Malabar coast, nestled between the Thejaswini and Karingode rivers. The name ‘Nileshwaram’ comes from one of the names of Lord Shiva ‘Neelakandeswaran’, the deity of the Thaliyil temple in the town. A folktale tells the story of Sage Neela, after whom the place is rumored to have been named, who installed the deity of Lord Shiva thousands of years ago. Another legend says that Nileshwaram comes from ‘Neelichutta Idam’ (now Karuvacherry). Nileshwar once served as the seat of the Nileshwar monarchs of the Kolathiri dynasty and is famous for being the region associated with the wars between the Nileshwar kings and the Bednore Nayaks.

Interestingly enough, Shivappa Nayaka of the Bednore Nayaks was the architect of the Bekal Fort in 1650. Later on, Bekal went on to become an important part of Tipu Sultan’s administration and consequently fell to the British, and ultimately became part of India after independence.

Nileshwar is famously known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Kasaragod district and is home to numerous temple festivals, old markets, sacred groves and is also the fountainhead for various folk arts. Bekal is famous for the coastal jungle trail ‘Mangrove Trail of Malabar’ which offers much boating, birding and hiking opportunities. The long white-sand beaches of Bekal are now seeing a host of five-star resorts catering to high-end millionaire clients.

Summers in Bekal and Nileshwaram are humid, tropical and hot, with maximum temperatures hitting 35 degrees Celsius, while monsoons see very heavy rainfall. The best time to go on a road trip in the region is during the winter season when the temperatures are around 20-30 degrees Celsius.
