Cape Peninsula

It features pristine white-sand beaches met by craggy mountains interspersed with quaint little coastal towns. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope can be found along the southern end of this spectacularly scenic peninsula, while the northern tip is crowned by the world-famous Table Mountain which towers over the city of Cape Town.

Visitors can look forward to a wide selection of activities including hopping on a boat ride to Seal Island from Hout Bay, exploring the magnificent Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, and viewing the colony of African penguins on Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town. Don’t miss the opportunity to take in the breathtaking views from the top of Table Mountain.

Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents and large waves. It is a rare pleasure to swim with the penguins but do not touch or feed them. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

Seal Island Hout Bay

Trips departing from Hout Bay Harbour ferry passengers across to nearby Duiker Island – also known as Seal Island – where thousands of Cape Fur Seals can be seen in their natural habitat. The boat trip provides beautiful views of the bay, the harbor, the Sentinel and Chapman’s Peak.

Cape Point

Cape Point is a spectacular sight, covered in endemic fynbos and home to breathtaking bays, beaches and rolling green hills and valleys, just 60km outside of Cape Town. Cape Point falls within the Cape Floral Region, a World Heritage Site. The Cape Floral Region is one of the richest areas for plants in the world – it is home to nearly 20% of Africa’s flora. Cape Point is open daily and is a must-see.

Cape Point Funicular

The Flying Dutchman funicular takes visitors at Cape Point up to the lighthouse, where there is an outstanding view of the point and ocean.  The funicular is named after a ghost ship whose destiny it is to sail the oceans forever. More information can be found at the museum.

Optional Activities

  • Cape Point Ostrich Farm
  • Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
Cape Point Ostrich Farm

This is a productive breeding farm. A family-run business which in its existing form, was acknowledged in 1996. The 65 ha farm is owned and supervised by Angelika and Dr. Ernst Coelle.

Being a breeding farm, everything is done to comfort and accommodate 40 Ostrich pairs. They live in 40 camps and ensure that there are always plenty of eggs to incubate. Guided and very detailed tours in German, English and French throughout the farm familiarizes one with the life cycle of the ostriches.

During the breeding season, quite often you will be able to experience the hatching of an ostrich chick. The facilities can accommodate up to 800 birds.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

On the lower slopes of Table Mountain, the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens showcases some of the Cape’s rich flora. Taking centre stage here is the unique ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Those who work up an appetite while exploring this garden paradise can visit the restaurant or tea room, which are fully stocked with delicious meals, yummy treats and refreshing beverages. In summer, Sunday music concerts provide sunset entertainment. Kirstenbosch is rated as the seventh best of its kind in the world.

The Table Mountain cableway, a must for all visitors to the Cape. After descending the mountain, you will depart on a tour of the “Mother City” taking in Signal Hill – where the Noon Day Gun is fired at midday, every day except Sunday – through the colorful Bo-Kaap or Cape Malay Quarter, past the Grand Parade, City Hall and the Castle of Good Hope and South African Cultural History Museum.

Table Mountain Cableway

A trip up Table Mountain is quite rightly one of the first things a tourist wants to do when arriving in Cape Town. It boasts of revolving floors, giving passengers a 360-degree view. Once on the top, a 1000m above the city below, you are rewarded with spectacular views.
